Tesla Semi unveiled with tri-motor setup, megawatt charging tech
yahoo ^ | 2 Dec 2022 | Pras Subramanian

Posted on 12/02/2022 7:48:39 AM PST by DUMBGRUNT

Tesla’s Semi will have a Tesla estimated range of 500 miles on a single charge, and that range can be achieved hauling a max payload of 82,000 lbs of freight (Tesla says federal regulations allow electric trucks to go 2,000 lbs above limit).

When just using the Semi without an attached trailer, Tesla says the Semi drives like a regular car, and is quite fast given its electric powertrain. "It looks like an elephant running around like cheetah,” Musk joked.

Don't even bother trying to prove it

Here ya go. Again, you don't grab a bigger market share than all other car companies combined in EVs in America, if you have a crap product.

DOT reg’s allow 11hrs of driving in a 14hr day, with a mandatory 30min break after 8hrs. No telling how long it’ll take to get stuff delivered.
= = =

Try to get the charging stations, and the time to charge, in sync with that. Good Luck.

How much charging capacity will be needed. An estimate can come from how much fuel they pump per day, converted to KW or some such.

More Good Luck.

Unless there are charging ports in truck stops in the overnight parking areas, this is a nogo for the OTR truckers.

While charging, the truck drivers can Tweet. Good use of their time.

—” The article said 82,000 payload. The writer of the article is ignorant of US trucking terminology and weight restrictions.”

Are you certain?

Yes some lacking knowledge on the topic, but not exactly the “writer of the article”

Do you know the difference between GROSS weight and PAYLOAD weight? The weight limit on US highways is 80,000 lbs GROSS weight for 18 wheelers. Gross weight includes truck, trailer, cargo, fuel, people.... everything.

Again, the gross weight for EV semis is 82,000 lbs, not 80,000 lbs.
Look it up.
Its easy enough to do

Death Valley horse recreations these days require the horse poop not to be left behind. It is picked up, or maybe captured by an ‘exhaust capture bag’.

So this part of the future has changed.

Musk himself mentioned it in his presentation last night in the semi delivery to Pepsi.

Posters should realize that their general technical acumen & common sense (or lack of it) is on display for all to see with every post they make.

This is particularly true on any thread concerning green energy, global warming, etc. Fanboys generally rate low, imo.

Ok, for the KINDERGARDEN posters here......

Copied directly from the article.....

“and that range can be achieved hauling a max payload of 82,000 lbs of freight (Tesla says federal regulations allow electric trucks to go 2,000 lbs above limit). “

Listen to me. Watch my lips. “Max payload” and “Gross Vehicle Weight” are NOT THE SAME THING. Yes, I am shouting.

The average 18 Wheeler (Truck and Trailer) weighs somewhere in the 32,000-33,000 range when empty.

The Federally regulated maximum gross vehicle weight for 18 Wheelers is 80,000 lbs. IF YOU HAVE AN ELECTRIC 18 WHEELER, IT IS 82,000 LBS, ACCORDING TO TESLA.

80,000 Gross Vehicle Weight
-33,000 Curb Vehicle Weight

47,000 lbs of CARGO.

See, that is some elementary math for you. Do you follow? Here, I’ll even use YOUR number.

82,000 LB GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT
-33,000 LB CURB VEHICLE WEIGHT

49,000 LB OF CARGO.

I don’t give a flying flip if the Gross Vehicle Weight for an electric vehicle is 82,000 lbs. What is outright deceitful about the article is that it states is could haul “82,000 payload”. It can’t.

Here, read this and comprehend. I took 20 seconds and googled this for you. Two different sites explaining this.

https://www.salinastriallaw.com/blog/18-wheeler-weight-limit/
https://www.tcsfuel.com/blog/truck-weight-classification/

One More Time.

CURB WEIGHT is the weight of the vehicle including a full tank of fuel and all standard equipment. It does not include the weight of any passengers, cargo, or optional equipment. Curb weight is considered the closest weight to the actual weight of the vehicle.

GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT is the weight with everything in it such as passengers, luggage and other cargo. This is very important for truck drivers as they carry a considerable amount of cargo so it can alter the weight of their vehicle dramatically.

The author of the article is stating the Tesla can carry an “82,000 lb payload”. There is no such thing. A Tesla might be able to be allowed to have an 82,000 GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT. So what? That is only 2,000 lbs more than about 5,000,000 current 18 wheelers can carry.

Yes, it is a BIG DEAL when authors make such basic mistakes. It calls into question the veracity of the rest of the article. If they get something that simple wrong, then what else are they getting wrong?

If you can’t see how stupid you are looking defending this basic error, there is nothing I can do for you.

When your car is on autopilot and runs into vehicles on the side of the road it doesn’t much matter how the update / fix is done.

They are not meant to be good, they are meant to be bought. That is all. Like a 1974 Pontiac Bonneville. Looks okay, goes down the road, but that carburator WHEW, rebuild it every tank and it gets 14 mpg.

The fine print will say “some users will get less mileage, as it varies by weather, hills, wind, temperature and driver”. The stats were on a track at 72 degrees, no wind, with just a light sprinkling of fairy dust.

One of my kids is a OTR trucker. He spent thanksgiving weekend with us after parking his rig at a truck stop. I dropped him off at his rig and checked out his massive load.

His 53’ trailer was weighed down with a whopping 4500 lbs of foam panels. Probably the lightest load he’s ever run.
