A search is ongoing for an Arizona couple who disappeared while kayaking in Mexico on Thanksgiving, authorities said.

Corey Allen and his wife Yeon-Su Kim of Flagstaff were kayaking with their teen daughter around 1 p.m. Thursday in Puerto Peñasco, also known as Rocky Point, Mexico, when winds began to pick up, family and friends have said. Allen helped their daughter back to shore and it is believed he went back for Kim before the couple went missing.

Authorities in Mexico tweeted that a search for two Americans is ongoing, along with a photo of the couple.

Allen is a real estate agent and Kim is a forestry professor at Northern Arizona University, according to AZ Family. The couple reportedly has two teenage children.

I am fluent in Spanish , reading, writing, and speaking. I am also a pure, 100% Irish Catholic Caucasian. (I am a ‘person of color’ when I hold my breath a long time). I used to travel in all parts of Latin America. I felt comfortable in the large cities and small towns. I was still careful, as anyone should be as a stranger in a strange land. I even was able to participate in the Cuello archeology dig in Belize, before I learned that archeology cannot pay a mortgage. The Museum of Anthropology in Mexico is absolutely amazing. I no longer travel to Mexico, but if I did, I would definitely recommend that Museum. I sometimes read online information from Spain in Spanish to learn what they are reporting about Mexico. Some of the bus lines refuse to to serve certain areas, because of bandits and cartels, unless the army provides escort. The local people do not bring any cash, jewelry, or valuables on the bus. Sometimes gangs will stop the bus, make everyone get off, and then burn the bus, stranding all the passengers.

In Cancun, they advertise that certain areas are secure. I still don’t go because gangs have attacked areas of Cancun from the ocean.

“By charter jet? Brownsville is probably the closest place on the Gulf of Mexico”

No, the closest to Phoenix by FAR is Puerto Penasco. a 2.5 hour drive on the Arizona side. And a 1 hour drive on the Mexican side. The Mexican side of the road is actually much safer.
Brownsville 1250 miles. Puerto Penasco 213.

"...Stay the F*** out of Mexico..."

.

I don't need 'Ultimate' kayaking.
I'll stay in the USA and settle for just 'moderately intense and terrific' kayaking in Oregon.

I'll stick to the Clackamas, Rogue, Willamette, North & South Umpqua rivers - etc.
You don't need to go to Mexico for great kayaking!

Mexico sounds cool - except for the dying part.
Thanks anyway...

Well, if YOU think the Gulf of Mexico is only a 3.5 hour drive from Arizona, please remind me to never let you plan a trip for me. Driving, Galveston is a bit closer than Brownsville. Looks like a little less than an 18 hour drive.

kayaking in Mexico is as safe as a midnight stroll in Chicago thinking isn’t used by everyone.
