A few years ago (in January) I drove my diesel sedan to Val d'Or,Quebec and spent the night. When I arrived at 6PM it was about -20F (according to my car's dashboard). When I was ready to leave at 7AM the next morning it was -40C (according to the TV set in the lobby) and -40F according to my car's dashboard.

To my shock and amazement my car started and after letting it idle for a few minutes I drove off,heading to Montreal. For the first 50 miles or so the car felt like a tank.

At -40c the engine oil would be molasses and battery at it lowest output, it is a small miracle the battery was able to crank the engine and diesel was not gel.

For the record, -40 C is also -40 F.
