Celebrated filmmaker Quentin Tarantino is facing criticism for candid comments he made about actors in Marvel movies not being legitimate stars.

“I don’t love them,” Tarantino said of Marvel films. “No, I don’t. I don’t hate them. But I don’t love them. I mean, look, I used to collect Marvel comics like crazy when I was a kid.”
“There’s an aspect that if these movies were coming out when I was in my twenties, I would totally be f***king happy and totally love them. [But] they wouldn’t be the only movies being made, they would be those movies amongst other movies. I’m almost 60 so I’m not quite as excited about them,” he continued.
Tarantino repeated a common criticism of the films, claiming they are overhyped and repetitive, plus leave less room for more creative projects.
[snip]
"it’s just the fact that they are the entire representation of this era of movies right now. There’s not really much room for anything else. That’s my problem. It’s a problem of representation."
[snip]
Tarantino claimed moviegoers only cared about superheroes on screen no matter who was playing them.

Tarantino’s observations did not amuse several followers.

Marvel actor Simu Liu, who starred in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” also made his opinion known on Twitter.

“But they don’t get to point their nose at me or anyone. No movie studio is or ever will be perfect. But I’m proud to work with one that has made sustained efforts to improve diversity onscreen by creating heroes that empower and inspire people of all communities everywhere. I loved the ‘Golden Age’ too.. but it was white as hell.”

Yeah, and Martin Scorcese doesn’t consider the current super-hero films to be real movies, they’re just a product (not saying they’re all awful, some are entertaining).
You may be seeing a pattern. Scorcese and Tarantino frequently do their own screenplays and then direct the film. I don’t like all of their films, but at least they try and put original movies on the screen. It’s kind of like the current crop of musical ‘artists’ whose only talent is lip-synching to pre-recorded music vs someone like Paul Simon or Loretta Lynn.
The reason Hollywood makes superhero movies is that, due to the enormous investment required to produce a movie, producers are highly risk-averse. They don’t like to gamble on new concepts.
Superheroes are considered to be “presold” properties. They have a built-in customer base and bring in a lot of moola.
And memorizing dance routines.
well, he’s not wrong...
I figure he’s entitled to his expert opinion...what’s the big deal?

Ironic that this is coming from an Asian guy. Asians are the most homogenous group of people in the world.
The CGI techs are the real stars.
They are comic book movies, based on comic books. Personally they leave me totally unmoved - nothing more than special effects extravaganzas. Sure Scarlett Johansson looks great in a black body suit, but that’s it.
“Me either, don’t get the fuss.”
Me too. Hell, I grew out of comics and into real books along about the 7th-8th grade.
That was about the second or third year of the Eisenhower Administration.
Bwah hah hah hah hah!
Where’s the aspirational and inspirational?
I agree. Henry Fonda and Charles Bronson.
Right. If not for the color green, Mark Ruffalo would be a B-list actor at best.
Take the laugh track out of a TV sitcom and what do you have? A boring set of memes, like flip cards on the screen.
Take the overproduced music, and sound track out of the Marvel movies and you have the same, only they are pretty little commiec book flip cards.
My point is, if they are on the screen and you cannot hear them, they are unwatchable. For the deaf and nearly deaf, they suck. You can’t say the same for a movie like The Great Escape, or The Man who would be King. The story still sucks you in.
They made movies without audible dialogue in the past. They also used music to keep you watching, but the stories were funny.
The MCU is like Warner Bros Saturday morning cartoons. Someday you won’t watch, you still remember them as funny but when you do watch it is only for a minute.
I agree with him. The actors in these films do very little acting, while the CGI Department creates the movie. A “Movie Star” is someone with depth and breadth of talent and the ability to carry a film without all the special effects. Can ANY of these new Hollywood thespians hold a candle to Carry Grant or Audrey Hepburn and the rest of the Hollywood giants? No, no they cannot. Same goes for Directors.
One thing I like about Quentin is that he knows what and who he likes. Back in 2007, I was sharing a vacation cottage with actor Lee Horsley on a Sportfishing TV shoot in Pueget Sound when Tarantino called him to discuss his upcoming role in DJANGO (which didn’t happen until years later). He and I were drinking scotch on the deck, watching whales in the bay when Tarantino’s call came in, so it was kind of surreal at the time. Too bad I wasn’t drunk enough to grab the phone from Lee and gush in “Hi Quintinnnnnnn!! I wanna talk with Quintinnnnnnn!! Blarrrb!”.
Quentin Tarantino copies other movies and adds lots of violence and has the actors swear up a storm.
Claudia Cardinale... nuff said.
There is a difference between an actor and a “star”. A star can be an actor, but doesn’t have to be.
A star is someone whose on-screen persona — image — is so loved by the audience that casting him in a movie guarantees butts in the seats. That persona is created, for the most part, on the decisions made by the director — lighting, camera angles, etc.
Without the benevolent presentations by their directors, Carry Grant and Audrey Hepburn would not have become stars, no matter how much acting talent they posessed.
oh yeah, and Raquel Welch.. woof woof
