I bought a backup generator. Now what?

I want to hire an electrician to set up my house so that I can just plug it in to my house when the power goes out. What additional things do I need to buy that the electrician will need?

Here is my generator - Westinghouse 12500 Watt Dual Fuel Home Backup Portable Generator, Remote Electric Start, Transfer Switch Ready, Gas and Propane Powered, CARB Compliant https://a.co/d/gSlgcUv

Also, what can I expect to be able to run on a generator of this size? I definitely want my refrigerator, and preferably my central heat and air conditioning (air conditioning will not likely ever be needed).

The Lister Petter website is in Africa and they do not shows any residential generators.

Powers more than that! Just try to make sure that when the chips are down and you are on the portable, to try stagger power usage. Remember, that most likely, your stove runs on propane as well. So read the manual and understand how to convert your stove to LP. It’s easy.

“If your heat is gas it’s no biggie.”

It is when the electrical grid goes down. Now you’re on LP and/or gasoline. (or wood)

Bingo on all that you said! Larger LP tanks are a serious backup to NG, and gasoline.

“If I didn’t have a propane stove,...”

Most all of us have a propane stove, that CAN use propane after a slight conversion in the stove, all spelled out in your stove manual.

They don’t make generators specifically for residential use.

They used to assemble the units in Kansas. That was closed years ago. AFAIK, they’re imported from the UK now.

This is either the only US distributor or maybe one of two.

Find a man to show you how to use it.

The problem I had was that an ice storm froze the door in the closed position. So you are right, it would have been a bad idea to have my Jeep parked in there at the time. What’s worse, is that before I knew it was frozen, I tried using the garage door opener — instant broken garage door spring😡 Then I had to wait to use the emergency release after it thawed...
