It's one thing to say it snowed more than 3 feet. It's another when you think about how much that weighs.
Upstate New York, especially Buffalo and Watertown, is getting hammered by a potentially historic winter storm dumping more than 3 feet on spots -- and barely anything on others a few miles away. How does that work?
Well, that's lake-effect snow for you. Learn how it forms and more about that weather phenomenon here.
**SNIP**
Old snow is even heavier. We crunched some numbers using estimates of snow weights and vehicles from various sources. Check out the equivalents of the average weight of a foot and more of snow (and old snow) on your roof.
Average weight of 12" of fresh snow on a roof: 7,000 pounds = 2 compact SUVs parked on the roof
Average weight of 24" of fresh snow on a roof: 15,000 pounds = 4 compact SUVs parked on the roof
Average weight of 36" of fresh snow on a roof: 22,000 pounds = 6 compact SUVs parked on the roof
Average weight of 48" of fresh snow on a roof: 30,000 pounds = 9 compact SUVs parked on the roof

And a ‘wet snow’ is considerably heavier than a light, ‘fluffy snow’.
I remember the olden days when the only thing to be careful of was radioactive fallout in the snow.
You can’t say how much the snow weighs because it depend on Square footage and water content. And if they are using an average then that is just idiotic. Because there is a big difference between a small roof and a big one. People have been so dumbed down.
Lake effect snow is very light and fluffy. It's dry.
The "average weight of fresh snow" is much heavier than the average weight of fresh lake effect snow.
Seems to me, Storm Team 4 is exaggerating the weight problem.
A news station exaggerating the severity of an upcoming storm? The hell you say.
I am in west Michigan, I take my roof every winter.
How much square footage of a roof? Is it a converted shed? A tiny home? An estate?
None of that matters, the weight of snow is fairly consistent, lake affect just means the snow developed by cold air passing over a lake as opposed to moving in a storm over land.
Does that take into consideration Daylight saving time?
So which is heavier: A pound of snow or a pound of BS?
The whole country has been covered with the latter in regards to climate propaganda.
Same, snow belt just south of Gaylord. East Jordan and Petos key got several feet.
We never make the news in northern MI for the same stuff that gets drama in other states.
Never been in Buffalo. Are you folks there happy about the shortage of fossil fuels or would you like to receive a tanker full of nasty fuel oil?
west new york... just out of the major lake effect, thank God
yup... you got it worse than me
If you had a professional hockey team, like the Buffalo Sabres, you’d get more attention for your snow.
Buy an EV. It will catch fire and melt the snow. Problem solved.
Don’t let that snowplow service do your house roof.
“Depends on the size of the roof.”
WAY too hard of a concept for those cretins educated in public schools.
