With the wide use of voting machines, the results are ready to be published a minute after the last vote has been cast.

No they aren’t. Because we DON’T want those machines sending out data over the wire, or worse wireless. The data is supposed to go to hard storage and moved by hand. The results aren’t available until the final wave of drives have been moved. And THEN most places are supposed to be doing a level of auditing with the paper record to make sure things are lining up.
