Gematria was a mystical practice used by some rabbinical scholars, later some Christian scholars. It is based on the concept that the Word of God is Divinely inspired and that the words and letters of the Biblical text can be used to uncover deeper secrets in Scriptures. My web page lays out the basic concept of the practice.
Because Gematria can uncover deep mysteries within scriptural text, some less principled 'scholars' seized upon the practice to uncover Divine powers and use them for personal gain, i.e.: MAGIC. Thus the practice was challenged by Christian writers as a potentially evil exercise.
It is certainly better to leave the practice alone if one does not understand the mystical study for achieving a deeper relationship with the Holy Spirit. As I said, Gematria dates back to the earliest revelation of Scripture.
Given all of that, it is nearly impossible for me to see how a system of 'English Gematria' can be productive. Still, I am open to examining further discussion and evidence.
