Clyburn has the totally made-up position of "Assistant Democrat Leader" whenever Democrats are in the minority. The Republicans have no such equivalent leadership position.

Clyburn became the House Majority Whip in 2007 when Pelosi became Speaker of the House and then-Whip Steny Hoyer became House Majority Leader.

In 2011 when Republicans regained the majority in the House, Pelosi took back the House Democrat Minority Leader role, bumping Hoyer back to Democrat Minority Whip and displacing Clyburn from leadership.

The Congressional Democrat Black Caucus complained of the optics of kicking a black man out of leadership, so Pelosi created the position of Assistant Minority Leader for Clyburn. When Clyburn is the House Majority Whip, a seat-warmer holds the position.
