INCREASING CHANCE OF FLARES: NOAA forecasters have boosted the chance of M-class solar flares today to 25%. This is in response to the continued growth of AR3141. The big sunspot now has a 'beta-gamma' magnetic field that harbors energy for moderately-strong explosions. Any flares will be geoeffective as the sunspot is turning toward Earth. Another sky event is the moon passing in front of Mars on December 7-8. It will occur much earlier in the evening.

"Passage of the Moon in front of Mars will occur during the evening hours of December 7. The southeastern states will mostly see the Moon close to Mars but not in front of it. For example, Huntsville, Alabama, will see the Moon very close to Mars at approximately 9:25 pm CST. In Eugene, Oregon, the Moon will occult Mars at 7:45 pm PST on the 7th. The occultation will end at 8:44 pm PST. I recommend downloading a free astronomy program called Stellarium. You can look up the times with that software to see when it will happen for your particular location."
