So glad my mother did not allow TV in our house while growing up. We lived far out in the country (18 miles to the mail box) with no close neighbors. She made sure we had a great in home library. I love to read, it's a good thing!
Amen!
You are working for a hybrid that provides both? Are these for personal use or sale? (Maybe DiW could rep your result to some Seed Seller!)
My father bought a several hundred pumpkins and had us sell them at the side of the road. I do not recall how much it made but it all went to him. Which was fine, we didn't care. He took us to McDonalds several times I think.
Too much like a shrunken head!
Now comes the fun part, how to use your pumpkins. There are a ton of ways to use these, but that would take forever to cover. I’ll be breaking my list up into 5 sections today; Farm Uses, In the Home, Cooking, Learning Tools and How to Preserve your Pumpkin. Once you’ve read through all the fun ways to use pumpkin, you’ll be racing to your nearest pumpkin patch to get more so you have enough for all the great projects and recipes.
Using Pumpkin-On the Farm
Compost
This is the best use for pumpkins after the season is completely done! The best 2 ways to compost your pumpkins is to bury the entire thing into your garden bed or add it to your compost heap. If you don’t have a compost heap, talk to your local farm or CSA about if they would be interested in your pumpkins.
Animals Treats
If your farm animals are anything like ours, they love food. And for our farm, pumpkin is a great 2 for 1 treat. We feed pumpkins to our pigs, goats, horse and chickens and they love it! On top of being a nutritional treat, pumpkin is one of the ways to naturally de-worm your animals so score!
Bird Feeder
If you don’t have farm animals but would still like to feed the environment, turn your pumpkins into a bird feeder!Hang a hollowed out pumpkin half and fill it with bird seed. You can also feed other animals by cutting your pumpkins into chunks and tossing it into the bottom of your yard or near a wooded area.
Flower Planter
This is a super simple project that can brighten up your home. Simply cut a hole in the top, drill or cut some drainage holes in the bottom and fill your pumpkin with plants! Mums are a common option, with mini pumpkins being a good home for succulents. You can also put your plant in while it’s still in it’s container making it easier to transfer at the end of the season.
Save the Seeds
When you are carving, cooking or disposing of your pumpkin, save the seeds. Simply separate the seeds and guts and let the seeds dry out on a paper towel for about a week. Save for next year and plant away.

I’m sure alcohol was involved. My stand wasn’t right AT the side of the road; you had to come into my driveway and it was off to the left.
Maybe it was a competitor? LOL! Whoever hit it had to make an EFFORT to do so. ;)
OK, flame me! LOL!
They take up an enormous amount of space--the vines really spread out!
“Book Recommendation. This little gal grows the vast majority of Pumpkins for major retailers like Walmart and Kroger, etc. I read her ‘Rags to Riches’ story a number of years back and I always recommend it whenever there’s an opening. An admirable young woman; a real go-getter!
“
Nice Story.
Cool prank, if it ended up helping advertise his business! Sounds like, lucky for you, it was before when people couldn't resist immediately posting the picture on Facebook—and getting arrested!
What a great, positive book recommendation!
No flame. As a Kale eater, I still tease about it. I still haven’t figured out how it got to be SUCH a Fad Food. It is really good for you, though. I like it raw in salads and smoothies, I’ll eat it cooked in soups, quiche and casseroles, but I CANNOT stand it just sauteed. Ick.
I also hate mushy factory-canned Asparagus and will always choose fresh or frozen veggies over any factory-canned.
But, when we’re all starving to death I’m sure I won’t be so picky...and the masses will be FLOCKING to my farm for a leaf of Kale, LOL!
LOL! That FBI meme is priceless!
Did you try to root some of the basil stems for future planting? The best method for me is to stick them in a small clear vase and set on a south windowsill. Just sticking them in dirt works too, but I get a higher rooting ratio in just water. Plus it’s fun to watch them root.
Well before any of that nonsense.
Everyone got containers of Roasted Pumpkin Seeds that Christmas. And a Pumpkin Pie. ;) This year it's Apple Butter and an Apple Pie.
You know, I’ve never tried that and now I have no leaves left. Well, maybe some teeny tiny baby ones. I have nothing to lose so I will try that. Thank you. Don’t know why I never thought of that before! I root a lot of things.
