At POS, debit cards are approved according to the amount identified in the account AT THAT TIME.
The transaction may be presented for payment by the merchant at a later date.
Approval is not payment.
It is digital kiting.
The kids don't know what that means any moar than they know what "float" means. I always used to write a check to buy groceries on Friday after noon. That way the night drop wouldn't be picked up by the bank until Monday morning and that check could float until Monday night.
