I have a litmus test for people that I’ve used since my junior high school years after reading “Anne Frank, The Diary of a Young Girl.”
I ask myself this question: If you were in a concentration camp together, would this person rat you out to save themselves? If the answer is yes, we are acquaintances, not friends. They are survivors, and will do absolutely anything to survive. Even sell you out and lose their humanity.
When someone shows you who they are, believe them.
My own father once pointed me out to his Jewish neighbors and told them, out of the blue, “Can you believe it, my daughter is a Republican!?!” They had the good grace to say nothing. What could they say? My father was a survivor.
There are worse things than dying or being alone.
One could betray your friends and family and lose your humanity.

Great wisdom.
If it wasn’t for the spouses I would have already ended the relationship.
That said, the spouse gets the benefit of the doubt but the Judas gets my cool reserve.

This has been my personal experience with all my acquaintances who were born/raised in Communist Russia, pre-1991.
It’s a dog-eat-dog world and every dog has to eat.
