how do people feel about whether its better to buy bullion or better to buy coins, eg American Eagle?

Smaller denominations are going to be your best bet if you have to USE the silver as currency.

One thing that occurs to me is that one does not have to get recognizable coins assayed when trading them... i.e. pay an assay fee.
