(2) There is no exit available; and no place to flee to.

Then, consider a group of people who happen to be Democrat.
Maybe the one or two dominant characters employ the Delphi Technique to keep the followers in line.
Any deviation from "proper" thought or speech is punished and threatened.
If you have ever had to work with Behavioral Studies or EDU types of people, you will recognize such sinister group-control methods.
The people who wish to escape need to know that exit is possible.
They need to know that survival after exit is possible.
They don't need your trust. They need an exit.
