They can't argue their positions because they don't know how they arrived at them. And the few that are still rational in some parts of their lives (excluding their politics) are flummoxed when they see that their political positions are diametrically opposed to reality.
I have had more than one Leftie try to discuss (not debate, just politely discuss) and they quickly became frustrated because their political views were rationally indefensible.
One of those people, a very experienced cardiac nurse, said about climate change, it's "settled science." I asked her how science can be settled when it is the very nature of science to never cease digging into the mysteries of nature. In other words, is science ever settled?
She threw her hands up and stomped out of the room.
I believe it was Thomas Sowell who pointed out that leftists tend to dominate fields like the media, academia, “science” (which COVID exposed as a fraud), public advocacy, etc. where people can still earn a lot of money even if they never accomplish any tangible, measurable success.
Very intelligent observation. And it's along the same axis why liars can't seem to keep their story straight.
My SIL, a leftie lawyer, when discussing “climate change,” said simply she believes in it.
I said, “so you admit that it’s a belief”
I said “ All earthly climate is governed by the sun.” (I have a PhD in Astrophysics.)
She called me “closed-minded” and stormed away.
That’s what liberals do. They state their beliefs, and when you challenge, they call you names, like “closed minded, fascist, racist, ...”
The article’s analysis is interesting but misses the point:
Once you adopt the liberal worldview, you have your Good Person Card. You’re Liberal because you’re good, and you’re good because you’re liberal. You no longer need facts, figures, or history to defend your position because any position you take is automatically good because YOU are good. This keeps them from honestly examining their policies, which is why they end up doing such monstrous things. And it’s why they get heated when you debate them: in their eyes you are not arguing a point, you are challenging their worth as a person.
