It’s pretty common in parts of Northern Europe. The demographics are a lot different there than the US though. I expect you would have seen things like that here in the 1970’s and before. Now, no way, you can’t trust anyone.

Japan is another place you could be perfectly comfortable doing something like that.

I can remember being left outside the A&P to watch my sister in her baby carriage. Doubt if I was more than 4 at the time. This was in Queens, NYC.

I remember babies sleeping in strollers on porches. 50s and 60s and 70s in small towns
