No one went the Thorium route because it doesn’t produce bomb making by-products.

Up and running the waste heat from a thorium cycle reactor can be utilized to make oil and natural gas from coal, and thorium can actually be extracted from the waste of that. the reactor can also be utilized to destroy high level uranium cycle waste.
