Trump needs some people to run against him, to stay in the news cycle and to keep in practice.
Pompeo is a good reliable conservative voice which will help amplify the Republican platform.
If Pompeo and DeSantis both run, we will have a trio of voices saying much the same thing. Which will help counter any RINO voices that attempt to run.
