Pointing to the math, Clay Travis pontificates that perhaps England should be paying reparations to African Americans
PGA Weblog ^

Posted on 09/17/2022 1:15:01 PM PDT by ProgressingAmerica

I know this is a contentious issue for many, yet the fact that the United States did not exist prior to a certain date, is really hard to ignore. On the Tuesday broadcast, toward the end of the second hour, Clay said the following:

I've always been fascisnated, Buck, by the reparations argument in the United States in particular, because you know slavery was only legal in the United States for 80 years. A lot of people never actually do the math on it. United States was a country from 1783 until 1863 that allowed slavery to be permitted as an independent nation, 80 years. Most reparations for slavery would actually have to be paid by England because England was in charge of the United States colonies for the vast majority of our history.

....

You never hear anybody who advocates for reparations say ok, England is on the hook for 1619 to 1783, which is whatever the math is on that.

The podcast link is here, here, and the direct downloadable option is here. If you do download or listen to the podcast - and I really think you should, start listening around 35:25. Buck of course agreed to some extent, pointing out that in those years, Transatlantic slave trading was an English program and that it was spread by them and other European powers. Historically speaking, all of this commentary is correct. There's a lot more to it and as a citizen historian I would love to give you eighty thousand words on it, but I'm really intent on just saying "Here's what they said on the radio show, let's focus on the math, this is it" and a little knock against the progressives is probably sufficient too.

Now, for the record, I think that Clay is calling out the hypocrisy of progressives on this. I do not think he supports reparations, and so its said I don't support reparations either. But to say that the United States should pay reparations for when The Empire controlled the land and the plantations would make about as much sense to say that the United States should pay reparations to Jamaica in accordance to their leaders' wishes to receive reparation payments. Jamaica is another nation who is also calling for reparations.

Why would the United States pay reparations to Jamaica when the U.S. was not in control? That land was controlled by the Empire. Why should the United States pay reparations for anything prior to 1783? The Empire still claimed the land. That means they also claim the slavery. Even more clear-cut is prior to the Declaration. Everybody was a proud citizen of the British Empire. How is that slavery America's fault when the U.S. doesn't even exist in any way, shape, or form?

Progressives can't have it both ways on this.

Jamaica was wholly-owned by the British Empire. Prior to 1783, the 13 colonies were wholly-owned by the British Empire despite that war that was going on. I don't support reparations, but let's be real with ourselves. This responsibility falls on the Empire. This is very simple math. The United States is just not that old.

While progressives are liars, the math doesn't lie to you on this, just subtract the years and see what you come up with.

I don’t think that Southern slave-holders should be let off the hook. IMO, any person who owned slaves in the American South should have to pay reparations to any person who was held as a slave in the American South. No one else, including the descendants of the persons mentioned.

They could pay for some boat tickets back to the marvelous ancestral homeland of Wakanda, Africa. Throw in a couple of box lunches too.

And don’t forget the Acadians who lost their colony when Britain defeated the French in the French & Indian War (when George Washington was a young man, he fought for Great Britain against the French).

The treaty ending the war, Britain took over the island, and ordered all the people living there (French citizens and some Indians)— to clear out of their homes and land, and forfeit their titles (as it is in warfare this happens). This happened fully after 1763 and the Treaty of Paris ceding Acadia to Great Britain. They cleared out all the Acadians most going to Louisiana where their descendants are known as Cajuns.... Acadienne.

They never got their land back, even though some were allowed to come back years later. Reparations have only now been proposed, wrongly— against Great Britain. See how this goes.

Never forget that the billions Obamaumao the First sent on pallets in US aircraft... of CASH was said to be the result of a Hague Court decision in favor of the Mullahs of Iran, to get back money the SHAH OF IRAN(!) paid for Lockheed military jets (never delivered). It has NEVER been US policy to pay a different government of a country for debts the new government says we owe them. This point was made by George Washington to the French revolutionaries who removed the King of France who had loaned the US money for our Revolution— and the Revolting French said we owed THEM!! Never paid them. And they chopped the King’s head off.

Agreed, I’m with Fred Reed on this:

I will pay a half-million dollars to each of my slaves, and free them immediately. I am not sure how many I have, but will try to give you an estimate in even dozens. Further, I believe that all blacks are entitled to a similar amount for every year in which they were slaves.

Clay Travis is good and has potential. However, he and Buck Sexton are more interested in their self promotion of various personal interests, such as sports and their websites, and they do not have the experience that Rush had to fill three hours with useful insight into current events. From the beginning of their joint Rush show, Buck Sexton has been promoting Ann Coulter and last week had her on with her usual swipe at Trump. Travis does better by himself but his interest is in sports and he is trying to straddle two important venues that does not favor the Rush show. Buck is in need of experience and is not the right person for the Rush show. I listen while doing house chores but the show needs help.

Why do the northern slave owners not get included in your suggestion?

I would think the slavery which existed in the Northern states is just as bad as that which existed in the Southern states.

In any case, your argument runs afoul of the constitution's "ex post facto" law prohibition. You can't hold people accountable for what was legal at the time they did it.

I'll take your word for it. I tried to warm up to Clay and Buck and just could not. I had better results with Bongino, but not enough to call myself a serious fan. Vince Coglianese and Chris Plante are pretty good, and I respect the Red Eye Radio guys. None of them are Rush.

Fine. Any American slave owner should have to pay reparations to any American slave. You did notice that only actual slaves who receive reparations and actual slaveholders would have to pay reparations? Any legal issue would clearly be moot because none of those parties are alive.

If you really want to muddy the argument then bring up North African Piracy and the white slavery markets. America’s first foreign war was to put an end to that. Prior to that war New England churches had a special Sunday collection for a randsome fund to bail out merchant sailors captured in the Med.

He should be using the dates 1776 and 1865, but it’s pointless—the British are never going to pay reparations. Whether the US does depends on how thoroughly the Democrats gain control after 2024 (if they win that election). A better case could be made for Britain paying reparations to the Irish for more than 700 years of occupation and oppression (including exporting foodstuffs from Ireland while 1,000,000 Irish were dying of starvation during the potato famine). And the Turks should pay reparations to the nations whose ancestors they enslaved.

Agreed. If I remember the numbers correctly, there were 250K to 500K black slaves brought to the states we now call the U.S. states. During those same 2 centuries there were 1.0 to 1.2 million white slaves brought to the North African states.

One major difference, almost all of the white slaves were captured by the North Africans raiding costal towns or ships with white passengers (very little whites capturing other whites and selling them as slaves).

Reparations are ongoing. Mostly in this form.

What happens to the losing team’s Super Bowl ‘champion’ merchandise?

Sometime around 10 p.m. Eastern on Sunday evening, sporting goods stores in the greater Kansas City area began preparing for an onslaught of fans seeking Super Bowl championship merchandise. Fans lined up outside the doors as workers cracked open boxes of T-shirts, hats, sweatshirts and other goods, each bearing the Chiefs logo and SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS.

Eighteen hundred miles west, the boxes in the Bay Area remained sealed shut. The SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS merchandise won’t ever reach the streets … not in America, at least, thanks to an ongoing NFL charity initiative.

The NFL pre-prints championship merchandise with both teams for obvious reasons: fan demand is at its highest while the confetti is still falling. That approach leaves the league with half its inventory rendered instantly unsellable.

Prior to 1997, the NFL simply destroyed the “losing” merchandise. Since then, it has enlisted the services of two charities to send it around the globe to people in need.

“There is a worldwide poverty crisis, millions of people who don’t have T-shirts and sweatshirts that we take for granted,” says Anna Isaacson, the NFL’s senior vice president of social responsibility. “So it’s an easy win for us to make sure this product gets into their hands.”

"Never even play the game."

I think this is cowardly. Why surrender, especially since this is a topic we can win?

The only challenge we have is we need to pit the reparationist forces against each other. Knowing that the math points to England and not the U.S. is the key to creating an internecene fight between them.

I was not advocating surrender. I was advocating not using their terminology, not playing any version of their game. I would rather tell a nitwit that we are not in arrears to former slaves than suggest they bother someone else with their nitwittery.
