Alabama told a federal judge that it could soon be ready to use a new, untried execution method called nitrogen hypoxia to carry out a death sentence.
The disclosure came Monday at a court hearing over inmate Alan Miller’s request to block his scheduled Sept. 22 execution by lethal injection. Miller maintains that prison staff lost paperwork he returned in 2018 requesting nitrogen hypoxia, an execution method that the state has authorized but never used. […]
Nitrogen hypoxia is a proposed execution method in which death would be caused by forcing the inmate to breathe only nitrogen, thereby depriving him or her of the oxygen needed to maintain bodily functions. […]
Nitrogen makes up 78% of the air inhaled by humans and is harmless when inhaled with oxygen. The theory behind the execution method is that changing the composition of the air to 100% nitrogen would cause the inmate to pass out and then die from lack of oxygen. …

Rope. Publicly.
Actually, not even that. There have been numerous incidents where people have entered nitrogen filled tanks and collapsed immediately.
Then someone tries to rescue them and they collapse on top of the first victim.
And another person trying to save them collapses on both of them.
When you enter a pure nitrogen environment, you don’t even get dizzy or have time to understand what is going on. You go right out.
States with the death penalty should have to use whatever method they use to euthanize dogs and cats.
What is wrong with rope? Go green and use reusables.
Right. See my post above. You know this all too well.
A pure nitrogen atmosphere is extremely hazardous because you simply have no ability to do anything once you take a breath.
whatever method they use on innocent stray pets at the pound should also be humane enough to use on these animals!
“I’ve always wondered why this is so complicated.
Car exhaust in a closed room. Done.
Charcoal fire in a closed room. Done.”
Your body feels it is suffocating because of CO2. To eliminate the bad PR photos, go with the inert gases or N2.
Painless is okay, but sounds “of the execution” including crying, begging and blood-curdling screams should be piped through the prison during the execution so the other inmates have something to think about while they listen to their soon to be former inmate’s execution.
“Charcoal fire in a closed room. Done.”
Years ago when I was young and dumb (now I’m old and dumb) I got a charcoal grille going for some burgers in the garage. The big door was open, so I figured it would be OK. After about 5 minutes I was dizzy and getting sick to mys stomach. NEVER AGAIN!
I’ve said this before, but helium asphyxiation makes for much funnier last words.
Sure let Nagin do it.
Mix in some of that spare VX just to be sure.
Just use a fentanyl overdose. We have a lot on hand.
“I’ve always wondered why this is so complicated.”
Me too.
What’s the common method of euthanizing animals?
I retired as a lineman from SWBT. We spent much of our time working in manholes in which the fear of nitrogen was ever present. One breath of that gas causes immediate permanent unconsciousness. A second breath was guaranteed death. Our safety protocols were stringent, yet some people did die from nitrogen gas during my career.
You weren’t issued oxygen tanks and masks?
“Untried”? I am sure it has been tested on animals.
It would be difficult for anyone to claim it’s cruel and unusual punishment considering how quickly it works.
It’s not. Once walked into a vessel purged with nitrogen. Went out like a light and never even knew what happened
