Backlit still isn’t the right explanation.
The light cast from an above angle on the front surface of the flag caused each star to disappear into a shadow crated by the raised “quilting” effect.
The stars are there and they aren’t black.

Not quilted, but a mylar balloon!

See above the flag- a mylar type material same as flag. Cheap.

Notice the refraction difference on top and bottom stars due to material
and how the (ceiling) light rigging creates a shadow 'DARK STAR' effect.

On exit photo, see bright blonde hair color,
light illuminating jacket.

The lighting was purposefully pointed further directly down, shading the whole blue field on the 'flag'; but it's all there.

Lastly, notice the Presidents' lower suit jacket as someone holds up a phone/tablet which just moments earlier captured two men in front of the flag- no stars, no red/white/blue.
