The royal beekeeper - in an arcane tradition thought to date back centuries - has informed the hives kept in the grounds of Buckingham Palace and Clarence House of the Queen’s death.
And the bees have also been told, in hushed tones, that their new master is now King Charles III.
The official Palace beekeeper, John Chapple, 79, told MailOnline how he travelled to Buckingham Palace and Clarence House on Friday following news of The Queen’s death to carry out the superstitious ritual.
He placed black ribbons tied into bows on the hives, home to tens of thousands of bees, before informing them that their mistress had died and that a new master would be in charge from now on.
He then urged the bees to be good to their new master - himself once famed for talking to plants.
The strange ritual is underpinned by an old superstition that not to tell them of a change of owner would lead to the bees not producing honey, leaving the hive or even dying.

I hope the bees don’t commit suicide over this news. They have been having enough trouble as it is, without having a dunce as their King.
If they want to quit making honey until William takes over, I won’t blame them.
The royal beekeeper quoted scripture: “Death, where is thy sting?”

My honey and I have BEEn waiting a long time to hear that Charles III has pollen.
Not that bizarre. It was always the custom to tell the bees when the beekeeper had died.
I have no idea where the custom started, but I think it’s done in many countries.
For heaven’s sake! I thought that was just an old Southern tradition! I’ve even heard of the old folks that would tie a black ribbon around a hive to let the bees know of the keeper’s death.
To Bee or not to Bee....
No one informed the bees that the monarchy is just a figurehead after puppet-lament usurped all power.
So, the new boss of the bee hive is a DRONE? They don’t last in the hive long before being given the old Heave-ho by the workers.
Britain - the land which embraces useless traditions, but frowns on the God-given traditions of male-female roles.
I suppose the bees were stung by the news.
