I was supposed to pull the cord, but he had to put my hand on the ripcord to remind me to pull it because I was enjoying the freefall too much.

Where I made some (solo) jumps in Oregon, many years ago, there was a guy who was banished from the jump center because he liked to get as low as he could before opening his chute. I watched one day as he got close enough to the ground that I could see the separate fingers on his outstretched hand before he pulled the ripcord, and his main chute was barely open when he landed. I was sure we were about to see him die. All it would have taken was the slightest hangup as the main deployed.

Sometimes I wonder if that idiot is still alive. Probably not.

I don’t know much about parachuting but my impression is the the main chute should not be quickly rotating and the reserve chute is only deployed if the main fails. Was something wrong here or did she just screw up?
