Actually it doesn’t. What happens is that the coronavirus is a great “reproducer”; but the quality sucks. Most of the time, as the virus mutates it becomes more contagious, but less effective.
That’s why the original variety was so harsh. Natural immunity is as good as any vaccine, but the variety you will see this winter is several generations weaker than what we saw in 2020.

If a virus retained lethality it would have a very hard time spreading copies of itself. So over time its mutations optimize toward highly infectious so it spreads widely (Lots of copies!) to low to no lethality.

I’m reminded of articles I’ve read about people who had SARS CV 1, back in 2001 (?), and, still today have an immunity to it....and, other corona viruses.
