There were 269 people aboard. the plane and most of the bodies were lost in the Pacific near Sakhalin Island. McDonald and his Western Goals Foundation worked with Soviet dissidents. He was a surgeon and also chairman of the John Birch Society. Senator Helms spoke at McDonald’s memorial service at DAR Constitution Hall.
