The 90's, back when the dems were more against China than the GOPhers, while the GOPhers pushed mfn, free trade, etc.
The problem was not so much NAFTA as it was presented, but rather what Clinton did behind the scenes that no one was aware of. He made China a free trade partner by giving then most favored nation status.
At the time, no one ever expected a President of the US would actually sell us out as he did. Many were under the allusion he was a liberal, but not a traitor.
Newt did a good job for the time when we needed him. Remember, for 60 years we never held both house of congress, yet he made it possible.
He was our transition, but truth be told, those who ran him out of congress were the problem. The Republican establishment joined the Democrats to railroad him from congress.
Yet, Gingrich did force Clinton to the middle, it's just that no one was truly prepared for the illegalities and evil of the Clintons.
The only person who sold out more to China than Bill was Newt.
