A lost eye is rather permanent. Nerves can regenerate, but this jury sounds severe. The liver does regenerate. It is not unusual for trauma patients to be intubated. Seriously injured people often go into shock, as well they are prone to aspirate and so protecting the airway is of paramount importance. It is not entirely clear if Rushdie actually was stabbed in his throat. I see things saying that he was and others which do not mention it.

I picked up ‘Satanic Verses’ when it was first published, but it was not for me, never bought it. Thing is that Rushdie and I share same birthday but he is quite a few years older than I am.
