Not sure if there is an official definition of Yacht Rock but it's basically soft rock music, primarily created during the late 1970s and early 1980s, that combines elements of jazz, rhythm and blues, and rock. It's synthesizer heavy, melodic and smooth. Basically studio-crafted perfection.

Steely Dan is the poster child of Yacht Rock. Those guys would slave in the studio for years, bringing in various musicians, to get every track absolutely perfect. I'm not sure that Donald Fagen or Walter Becker ever saw sunlight. I picture them perpetually hunched behind a massive sound board, sliding dials up and down until they got things just perfect.

I sense that Donald Fagen really hates that term.

There is a wonderful YouTube video of Fagan at a mixing board cutting in and out different instruments and backup musicians’ different renditions of their parts.

It’s about 40 minutes but worth every minute. If I can find it, I’ll post the link. But worth searching for.
