VANITY : Suggestion for reducing Freepathons
self | 6 August 2022 | self

OK, so I woke up this morning with a thought. It may not be worth anything.

People here are understandable frustrated with the fundraising and lack of donations to the site. We also do not want to clutter the site with ads and become beholden to outside interests. We want to remain as independent and self-reliant as possible.

Why not merchandize the FR name? Sell coffee cups, water bottles, t-shirts, etc with the FR URL and logo? I'm a woodturner and can make pens with logos/messages on them (though I *am* employed full time and would not have the time to make hundreds or thousands). I would even suggest selling e-mail addresses ( user@freerepublic.com ) for a nominal fee. The selling point would be a guarantee to not create, collect, or produce logs of any activity for this domain. This may take some up-front expenses to set up though.

Not only would this raise money, it would get the site out into the public eye more often.

I'm not saying this will replace freepathons, but perhaps it can mitigate the length and lower the monetary requirements needed for each one.

I like Crowder. He can be good but sometimes talks too fast for me and I miss the joke. I do like his "Change My Mind" stuff on college campuses.

Besides, he was rude to me.

Unforgivable.

Were you being grumpy? ;-)

On another site, I & another member set up a chess game & took bets - proceeds going to the site of course.

The bets would range from first pawn taken, first to castle, first to lose/capture a knight, bishop, queen, etc.- you get the idea.

I bet here on FR, there are numerous chess players...we could set up a tournament...

Someone else would have to run it, as I have no programming skills, eg: setting up a graphic board that would show the moves, but we have a ton of puter-savvy folks here.

“Stick around, eventually you will learn to think critically...”

Well... That is very highly debatable...

I am understanding your thoughts here my friend. What sort of expertise could members share and collect a fee to share 50% of to the FR?

Myself I have been making stand alone Linux thumb drives for free and sharing them in the spirit of promoting Linux here.

I would be in for accepting donations forwarded to the FR to do this.

Anyone else have anything to offer and do the same?

Time for tribe to come together and task share before we lose it...

Humble Gunner? You tribe or not? It is time to decide who’s side you are on man... Aren you excommunicating them or making efforts to keep them here?

Yeah, I know... It is a tough decision...

There was a story on the Freepers about two lesbians who adopted a young boy and starved him to death, I posted a picture of a noose with no comment, I was then suspended. A week later I had to call to get myself un-suspended. That was the end of my yearly donations, after that my donations were very few and far between.
I just hope who ever suspended me was proud of their effort.

The Brave Browser has methods for paying websites that you spend time on. FR should support that.

Good, then go away. If everyone isn’t kissing Ukraine butt, you ain’t happy. There are many RINO sites and RAT sites full of all that makes you happy/ Even yellow and blue lapel pins.

If I’m going to post a vanity, I’ll donate. This site is a HUGE resource for experts on troubleshooting underwater electronic circuits, professional rooftop volleyball rules, gardening in the arctic, nuclear power generation on the moon, Argentinian martial arts — you name it, someone here knows about it. More importantly, they are almost always willing to help. I learn new things all the time on FR.

I’m not interested in merchandise, but that’s just me. It certainly has worked for others.

In my opinion (which I guess covers this entire post), ads are a bad idea. Less because of the user experience, but because advertisers have too much influence over content, whether through their own views or outside pressure from their own customers, the media or the public in general.

Assuming there are funding issues, I think one of the major reasons is abuse.

I don’t donate regularly because of folks like ************. I’m not spending my money to read that nonsense. Only he knows what happened to him earlier in his life to cause his issues, but those issues are real, and front-and-center in almost ALL of his posts. He contributes NOTHING to the conversation, and if anyone else abused people like he does, they’d be booted. The proof that it is a problem is that I don’t even need to name him — we all know who I’m talking about.

Duplicate posts don’t bother me - in fact, they can be a good thing if someone missed the earlier post. I also don’t mind reading blog excerpts. It’s just people posting their opinion online for other folks to read. It reminds me of another site you may have heard of called freerepublic.com, where people can post their opinions openly (for the most part). It certainly doesn’t harm me in any way and if I don’t want to click through, I don’t have to.

Agreed. That is why I'm trying to come up with ad-free ways to raise money. Hence the idea for a "shop" page where we can purchase "logo"-ed items and email.
