I am so tired, and miss all of you. My FIL is stage 7c now and is nearly non verbal, extreme agitation, hitting, cussing, kicking, refusing food, and requires transfers with a lift now. I am getting up at 6, working in the barn until 8, get FIL ready for the caregiver at 9, and would like to get things done but end up having to stay nearby because the caregiver calls me for assistance all the time… then I have him alone from 2-5 and with DH the rest of the evening.
The mess with Covid and shots has not only done a number on our healthcare system but for home (and hospice) caregivers, CNAs, etc. Finding good caregivers is nearly impossible. Most want to be paid crazy amounts of money - $25-50 an hour (before Covid it was $15-20), under the table, and many barely speak English and can’t follow simple directions. I finally found one who was amazing with my FIL and had good attention to detail, but as he has progressed she has lost interest and missing many small things and some major things.
Today was the final straw. I have asked her repeatedly to keep the hospital bed at the lowest level and to put the head of the bed up because it helps keep him from falling and lessons his coughing. He has fallen twice because of this. Today, I head to his room immediately after she left and found him out of bed, on the floor, bed at the highest position, head not raised and his nightshirt was tangled in the railing - he was choking and scared to death.
His diaper was full (BM), and I don’t think he had been changed in the 5 hours she was here (but she tried to blame it on the hospice CNA for not cleaning him this morning).
We are letting her go tomorrow after her shift. I will back to 24/7 caregiving and searching for another part time caregiver. I am so tired. I do not want to put him in a nursing home, I want him to spend his last days here. But something has to give.
I’m sorry to vent here. Please pray we will find help.
We have rain in our forecast, for tomorrow.
