BOSTON (AP) — Bill Russell, the NBA great who anchored a Boston Celtics dynasty that won 11 championships in 13 years — the last two as the first Black head coach in any major U.S. sport — and marched for civil rights with Martin Luther King Jr., died Sunday. He was 88.

His family posted the news on social media, saying Russell died with his wife, Jeannine, by his side. The statement did not give the cause of death.

R.I.P. Bill...
You were a joy to watch on the basketball court...

You are correct, a joy to watch on the basket ball court and also a joy to watch off court.

Heard on Red Sox game today in tribute to Russell: Between HS, College and the Olympics, he played 21 “winner take all” games in his career and was 21-0 in those games.

Add in the 11 NBA Championships, and he is the basketball GOAT. The man had game when it counted.

Have to salute this great Celtic from the 1950/60s.

Russell vs Chamberlain was always a show back then. I couldn’t name a half dozen NBA players today.

Just waiting for JJ Redick to diminish Russell's accomplishments, like he did to Bob Cousy.

I know that won't happen, Cousy was white, and an easy target. JJ will never work again if he tries that with Russell.

And now, the anti White, leftist media propaganda hurricane begins immediately.

I recall Russell, Bob Cousey, Larry Bird, John Havlicek, plus another whose name escapes me. I had every NY yankee card from 50-62.

I think he was one of the old NBA players who did a vax commercial.

While coaching the Seattle Supersonics, he married a white girl from the suburbs of south King County. I was buying gas in that neighborhood and he was filling his Rolls Royce right next to me, (self service) with nobody else around.
I said something quietly like "how's it going coach?", or something similarly innocuous but he gave no response whatsoever. Wouldn't even look my way. It was pretty cold. Great player, though.

I don’t care one way or the other. But the go to comment here when ANYONE dies is to blame the vax. It’s old and tiresome and I was just being an ahole.

No worries.

Every at 88 is gonna die “soon.” Lol. How doesn’t really matter much. (Unless they are pushed in front of a bus.)
