This week's opening of NFL training camps has revealed a new league-wide fashion trend: The Guardian Cap.
The waffled helmet covering creates a soft-shell layer that can significantly reduce the impact of helmet-to-helmet hits, according to the company.
The Guardian Cap, which closely resembles rugby's scrum cap, was adopted during the annual league meetings in March as part of the NFL's ongoing effort to reduce head trauma during practices.
According to the league, the cap can reduce the force of head contact by 10 percent when worn by one player, and by 20 percent if every player involved in a collision has one covering their helmet.
Players at certain positions deemed to be at greater risk are required to wear the caps between the start of training camp and the second preseason game, when concussion rates typically spike. Those players include offensive and defensive lineman, right ends, and linebackers.

Won’t those things be hot as hell? Brain boilers.
Not sure about the senile part, but I get your point. I played football, rugby and wrestled through high school. Played College football and rugby. Then 20 + years in the army. At age 51 my body is wrecked. The first 30 minutes or so every day I walk like Fred Sanford. Once I’m warmed up it’s ok.
But my hands, back, knees, neck…something always hurts. Can’t really run anymore but I do walk 10,000 steps a day. Not sure if it’s more Uncle Sam’s fault or mine. I was a pilot, so had it pretty good. Oh well.
I didn’t read article. The Guardian caps look like outside padded helmets.
Pussies.
By the stupid author’s own words the helmets are NOT a “fashion trend.”
that ia just what they look like
Is that G for gay ?. A sorry replacement for the Indians.
Stop teaching tackling where you use the helmet would help a lot. The helmet should protect for incidental contact only. That instruction needs to start way down at little league, maintain it through jr high, high school and college. Apply crippling penalties if done deliberately. Here’s a suggested ‘crippling penalty’ - make the defense play a man down for a series.
I hope they also increase their knee padding, don’t want any injuries from these commies kneeling during the anthem.
Don't get me started. It's sad.
