When I was a kid at 14 and they first landed on the moon, I figured we would have already had functioning lunar colonies by the 1990s. But nobody. The commies had to spend money on Socil/socialist projects that drained our ability to succeed in space exploration. Jerks!

Why go to an atypical place? Good temps are good but aren’t the goal, we’ve got nice temps here.

Much easier to survive there. Doesn't take as much energy to condition the living quarters.

All you need to do is create a machine that drills down about 5m, detonates an explosive, and then sprays the inside of the resulting hole with an airproof plastic/compound. Then you have a temp controlled room where you can probably grow some small amount of algea for co2/o2 exchange, you’ve got a liveable place as long as there’s food.

Yes, it’s GeoThermal AC. Or would this be LunarThermal?

I had already accommodated the temp advantage in my post you responded to.

Explore an alien place not a place that looks most like home, imo.

My rough calculations conclude that the pit is 69 meters across, making the floor about 3739 square meters of walking around space. That is very close to an even 1 acre.

If the moon base is inside the lava tube then the personnel can walk around in this one acre for recreation and look up at a small part of the sky. Everyone would want the time bracket for when the Earth is visible.
