Salisbury Steak Deserves a Comeback Salisbury steak is one of the easiest comfort dishes we always seem to forget about.
the take out ^

My fiancée was texting one of her best friends the other night, who told her she’d recently made salisbury steak for dinner. Huh. Salisbury steak. I hadn’t thought of Salisbury steak in years, and the only time I’d really had it was from a frozen microwaveable tray when I was a kid. It didn’t even occur to me that people made Salisbury steak from scratch. But when you think about it, Salisbury steak is essentially just hamburger patties in brown gravy, sometimes with mushrooms. I thought, “Wait. Why am I not making this too?”

A few nights later I went to the store, grabbed some ground beef, some mushrooms, and a jar (yes, a jar) of brown gravy and slapped dinner together in under an hour. And guess what? It was freakin’ delicious.

The Earl of Sandwich… most overrated person in history. He no more invented the eponymous meal than Henry Ford invented the wheel

I think he was a forefather of the guy who suckered the Nazis in WW2 with fake papers planted on a dead body that washed up in Spain!

I make a great hamburger stroganoff. Must use ground round, fresh mushrooms and sour cream over egg noodles. Plus the spices. It’s so good. Definitely a comfort food meal.

I was wondering how the Earl of Salisbury translated to Salisbury steak - he was reduced to hamburger after the cannonball hit him?

So I looked it up.

Salisbury Steak was named after James H. Salisbury (1823–1905), an American physician and chemist known for his advocacy of a meat-centered diet to promote health, and the term Salisbury steak for a ground beef patty served as the main course has been used in the United States since 1897.

But the Earl is an interesting story. A relative of mine served with a battery of artillery (3 cannons) during the CW. The Colonel in charge had two horses shot out from under him, one by a cannon ball, another by an exploding shell - I’ll spare you the description of what happened to the horses. The Colonel survived & the cannon saved that battle for the South (second battle of Manassas or Bull Run).

I’m not into canned vegetables unless I’m in dire straits (flashbacks to the 70s when that was all my family could afford), but I think I could do a twist on your idea using frozen vegetables instead. Might take a few minutes longer, but maybe it could be done. Probably would cost more than $20 unless I got the veggies on sale. Great idea, though! Who doesn’t love a 10 minute Thanksgiving meal? Thanks for sharing!
