You are missing a small clue to why: during World War II and for several years afterward there was famine and disease in those areas, especially tuberculosis. So all the people with bad genes died.
True, if you survive TB and infectious disease, and stay on your low protein low fat diet due to poverty, you will probably live to be 90, because your cholesterol will be low, your fertility rate is low so you don’t die in childbirth, and you will remain thin, not just from the diet but from all that hard work trying to grow food.
but that same low protein low fat diet means that many people will have lousy immune systems and will have died.

We all know the Posse Comitatus Act prohibits POTUS from ordering active duty/Nat’l Guard Army & USAF troops from enforcing domestic laws unless requested by a Governor, during rebellion, etc.
BUT DID YOU KNOW SPACE FORCE WASN’T ADDED TO THE POSSE COMITATUS ACT UNTIL 2022?!
This means SF satellite surveillance could’ve been ordered by POTUS to detect foreign interference in the 2020 election!!

At the risk of starting a “Yeah, we were so poor that ...” contest, boxed mac and cheese would have been a treat in our house at times. In our most desperate periods, we cooked bulk macaroni and mixed it with condensed tomato soup and would have only that for days. We also made milk from huge bags of milk powder and mixed it with water. That stuff was awful. My life is comfortable now, but you never quite forget being poor.

No....the island is full of nutritious trees, plants and herbs.
Pine seeds, Wild cherries, blueberries, walnuts, figs, olives, mushrooms, various spinach and dandelion. Spouse was a child during that era.
Spouse spent last winter last year there in a small house on the top of hill with several weeks of snow.
She lived mostly on wild mushrooms that grow under the snow, (small round ones) or larger flat ones from the forest.
Local farmers have pigs and wild goats for sale.
Her sister once trapped a wild goat with a fishing net trap set up in her vegge garden....goat ended up in the cooking pot.
