Same reason people watch MMA, train wrecks and rubberneck at traffic accidents. Civil War threads are pretty much a guaranteed furball as well.
Song time ago, evolutionist v. creationist v. intelligent design threads were pretty much assured dumpster fires, but I haven't seen many of those lately.
