His bridgework had been done by Paul Revere, and the bridgework on the corpse was identified as Revere's work. His lodge brothers wrapped the corpse in a blanket, took it back to Boston by boat and gave him a proper funeral.
Warren was not only Grand Master of St. Andrews Lodge in Boston, but also Grand Master of all Masonic lodges in the colonies. His body had been set to be decapitated and the head sent back to London for display, but an officer in General Howe's unit who was also a Mason made sure that Warren's body was buried and not defiled.
Incidentally Roxbury before it was annexed by Boston was a rather affluent town. I have driven through it several times in recent years. My high school is still there, on Warren Street, well the structure is.
If you look carefully, the street radiates beautiful design. There are 19th century apartment buildings still there where the facades contour with the curves of the road. I think that the architecture was beautiful. Some of the old houses there obviously had great gardens which upon consideration can be seen through the blight and decay of 60 or more years.
Roxbury these last few decades has been the base for the Black community of Boston and the Economics of the area long ago deteriorated. In the late 1950s it was a predominately Jewish area with a Yeshiva that apparently was the center of the Jewish community for decades. The exodus to western suburbs essentially resulted in the ‘White Flight which by 1970 was almost complete. This was at about the time that the great Boston bussing controversy exploded.
