Diana Ross's Age Creates Another Controversy on 'Jeopardy!'

Incorrect answers are fairly common on Jeopardy!, but viewers couldn’t get over a couple whoppers from Tuesday’s show. In fact, the opening round category “A Number Between 1 and 100” drove much of the fanbase to Twitter, where they commented on the shockingly incorrect response.

“Your standard phonograph record until the 1950s, or the age Diana Ross turned in 2022,” was the first clue to cause trouble. Contestant Jake Marvin wagered all his winnings on the Daily Double clue, but he may have lost more than money when he incorrectly guessed 90.

The 78-year-old singer has a very passionate fanbase, and they did not appreciate her being labeled a nonagenarian. During a Final Jeopardy! round in March, two contestants separately guessed that Diana Ross was 95 years old and fans were outraged. Unfortunately for Marvin, the Diana devotees have not forgotten that recent perceived transgression.

Look, the contestant was a young man. I bet he had never heard of 78 rpm records.

Surprised if he’s heard of Diana Ross.

I've noticed the predominant generation of Jeopardy contestants these days have little clue about things before 1990.

Why do women always get insulted when you overestimate their age? You would think it would be an honor to make to 90 or 100 years old.

Diana Ross at the Glastonbury festival 2022:

With that image, I am in love with her, again.

I had a record player way back when that had a 16 speed - never knew why it was on there.

Spoken language records were slooooow. No need for any dynamic range when some actor is droning on and on.

It was so you could play 33s and 45s and make them sound funny.

“Your standard phonograph record until the 1950s, or the age Diana Ross turned in 2022,”

lol

Reading it, it does sound like an unnecessary dig at Ross.

(But if given the choice between 90 and 78, I would've guessed she's 90.)

That host is unwatchable.

As for the Chuck D question, I'd have missed with 14 clues.

That’s OK Ms Ross, we still think you are a beautiful lady!!!

BTW, went to a Temptations concert a month or so ago. The only original Temptation is Otis Williams and he is now 80. Amazing to see him on stage. Diana Ross went on some of the Motown bus tours with the Temptations. Motown put out some great music in its day.

Mostly spoken word. I saw a set of part of the Bivke at a used book store. Also, radio used that speed for recorded programs, but on very large discs.

Jeopardy was also mistaken on a “standard” speed. 78 was dominant, but there were old victrolas with variable speeds and records with different settings.

It's before I was born, but I would have guessed 78. The Supremes started having hits around 1964, and she was aout 20.

Things people are demanded to know is getting scary. During China’s Cultural Revolution, people were randomly selected and instructed to quote out of Mao’s Little Red Book, and if they couldn’t, they would be beaten, sometimes fatally. Is that where we’re headed?

I saw it. People don’t know about 78 RPM records. Ok

But why are they referencing Diana Ross’ age? How obtuse.
