Interestingly enough the word grok was invented by Robert A. Heinlein in his 1961 science fiction novel Stranger in a Strange Land.
Stranger in a Strange Land is also a song by my favorite band, Iron Maiden.

Simple story and fantastic quotes all throughout. My boy shared it with his Unit in Iraq. They all read it it. Later he used it in his Class teaching upcoming Officers. Turns out, Military schools had been using that work for decades. It showed about camaraderie and a lot more. The movie was a joke, though I liked it.
That’s where I learned the word “grok”. I read that as a mid-level teenager, and re-read some of it years later and was surprised how crappy the writing was, and how loathesome was the hedonist message. But the word “grok” was good.
