Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has waded into the US abortion furore saying the decision which allows the practice to be banned was a 'setback for women' that 'caused enormous distress'.
Mr Albanese, who was flying to Spain to attend a NATO conference, told ABC radio the US Supreme Court's decision to overturn the Roe v Wade ruling guaranteeing abortion freedoms transgressed women's rights.
'Well, people are entitled to their own views, but not to impose their views on women for whom this is a deeply personal decision,' Mr Albanese said.
'That is, in my view, one for an individual woman to make based upon their own circumstances, including the health implications.
'This decision has caused enormous distress.'
Abortion is legal in all Australian states and territories, albeit with different term limits.
The decision on Saturday to overturn the landmark 1972 ruling that provided a constitutional right to abortion has led to furious protests across America as 26 states move to ban or restrict abortions.
Mr Albanese said the ruling was 'a setback for women and their right to control their own bodies and their lives in the United States'.
'It is a good thing that in Australia, this is not a matter for partisan political debate,' he said.

In a way, he’s correct. It’s probably a deeply personal decision to commit premeditated murder. Anyone with a conscience or a modicum of morals has to consider the spiritual consequences of murdering a baby, even if they are not religious. Call that psychological consequences for the nonbelievers.

There are rights that are not specifically mentioned in the Constitution.
For example: the right to travel, or the right to own property.
Abortion is not one of them.
Different states had different laws, just like in Australia, right up to 1973, when a far left Progressive Supreme Court created the right to Abortion out of thin air.

What you say has been true from my experience - I known five men who pressured or tried to pressure women to abort - my former boss bribed two separate women to abort (he was/is a wealthy man).
