The "help-wanted" sections of newspapers and job sites are overloaded with small businesses begging for employees. Every fast-food restaurant you enter has help-wanted signs. There is an obvious employee shortage going on all around the country. Serious question: What is causing this issue? Gas prices and inflation are through the roof, which would suggest that even dead-beats would be forced to get jobs. Is there some sort of secret COVID payments still going out? I'm at a loss.
There’s some of that, but the real change are compensation expectations. We’ve trained an entire generation that they should expect ridiculous money for menial jobs. Companies could likely fill roles if they upped their wages — pure capitalism at work — but these wages are not realistic for the tasks being performed.
The Democrats offer a master class in destroying civilization…
…but we like to think we’re winning.
when the recession hits things will balance out some but....
But could this coming recession, along with a large drop in GDP, correspond with a low unemployment rate or even full employment?
Right now there is a large worker shortage and a recession of course will cause a drop in demand and layoffs.
But are things so out of whack that may just cause things to become “neutral”
Works sucks. The gubmint will give us money. Rich people suck too. I deserve money for nothing.
< reaping the whirlwind sown in in the seeds of our abject failed public schools >
There are lots of reasons. The boomers retiring is a big one. But there are a lot of people staying home to home-school. The governments are employing far more than ever, taking people from the private sector. Then there are the woke HR people who create rules that some people, especially boomers just won’t abide. White men know there is no way to get ahead, so they retire even with less money. Also, the illegals have under the table jobs. They don’t register as employed. And there are lots of people who have figured out how to get enough money selling things on ebay or youtube or a thousand other things that don’t require employment.
But boomer retirement and die off is the biggest factor. Millennials (born before 2000 but turned 18 after) are now a bigger generation than boomers. But gen X (1965 to 1983) and gen Z (2000 to 2018) are much smaller.
First off Get Rid Human Resources. There are many good potential employees out there that don’t get a chance because of ridiculous education requirements. One of the best employees I had could not read or write. High School Graduation is not required in most general labor jobs.
Employed Population: Aged 15-64: All Persons for the United States

The number of employed persons in 1Q2022 is back up to the number in 4Q2019.
But I think a lot of people found better things to do than work in restaurants.
Sounds like a business opt for someone. Round up a few used
mobile structures, trailers/campers, move them in and let the
people stay there for a few months and close ‘em down when gone.
Open ‘em up next year when the visitors began showing up.
“Easy. Wages need to be raised. Labor follows the same supply-demand curve as any other commodity.”
We have been advertising for a professional and a support employee since mid-March. The ad does not state the compensation package. Not a single applicant for either position. This suggests that wages, supply and demand may not be the issue since an applicant has no idea how much we are willing to pay.
I have a small business and I have had young people show up for a day or two and never come back. No reason given.
The unemployment rate only takes into consideration people that are working or actively looking for work. You also have to consider the labor participation rate, which is the percentage of work age people who are working or looking for work. Under Trump, the labor participation rate went up and unemployment went down. During the pandemic, unemployment went up and the participation rate went down. Under Biden, unemployment has gone down, but the participation rate has stayed low as well.
That’s exactly why they need to work for their benefits. At least the taxpayer gets clean toilets in return.
Read some of liberal tears on Reddit antiwork. They all believe they are better than the employers and think they have the power. Until the recession comes. They also all believed WFH was permanent.
What do you expect this number to be? And where are they going to get the people?
Lots and lots of people retired at 62-65. They are still included in that number, but they are never going back.
So, I would be interested in what you think it should be?
I retired before covid. There are a lot more people playing weekday golf now than before covid.
I’ve been arguing the same thing for a decade now.
The marginal benefit of working vs. not working is not worth it.
Rent, food, Medicade, legal help, utilities, etc. Let’s say, for the sake of argument, it’s the $46K you cite.
That includes 52 weeks paid vacation.
vs. let’s say you clear $30/hr - that’s $62K
So the marginal benefit is 16K (less gas, lunch, etc.)
And 2 weeks vacation
Easy math, for those with no work ethic.
I thought of that, and I’m sure the business owners have also. I’d guessing there are levels of bureaucracy standing in the way.
I know what it is. I am included in that number. But I won’t be going back to work any time soon. There are tons of folks 62-67 who are included in the LPR but who retired and are not going back. Ever.
When there is a big demographic shift such as the one we are experiencing, the paradigm through which the numbers are read has to change as well.
It’s not 1986 any more.
Yep. Just part of the commie program to destabilize this republic. And we give a welfare mother more money when she has more kids. What’s the logic in that? You incentivize what you pay for. Her handout should be cut if she drops another kid. And then cut some more over time. You need a disincentive for having kids politicians make taxpayers support.
Living on Mommie's and Daddy's money.
What do you mean where are we going to get the people?
Did you not include in your thoughts the millions of illegal aliens let in these past few years? Or the fact that there is still American population growth?
