I think you're right. I was watching a youtube video by a girl who transitioned to male, and then back again, complaining at one point--rather offhandedly-- that it was really not that exciting after all.
Grant him his wish and then cut him off financially. Let’s see how long this tantrum lasts.

All the kids who got Fs is elementary grammar for the inability to master pronouns now have grounds to have their report cards amended because their illiteracy has become standard grammar. A son is “their” in the first use and “she” in the second? We have to gender-bend standard English just to make these morons feel better about themselves? I agree… I expect that the father is either weak or just didn’t spend time with the kids. But I think the role of the mother in turning the boy against his father and, by extension, against men in general, has been overlooked.
I should add that I’m not talking about Musk’s case in particular (although it may be true there), but the general phenomenon.

Likely mom got a huge settlement, depending on Musk’s net worth at the time, plus support, plus trust funds for the kids. At 18, the kid likely has already received control of the trust.
Firmly believe no should receive control of a large fund until 35 or 40. Should be written so that there is adequate income for the recipient to make mistakes & live, but the bulk stays under management.
But, you are likely correct. I recall the Pritzker kids from the 2nd marriage sued because the older half-sibs got more and alleged mismanagement of their funds. They did get an increase, but nowhere near what the original cohort of children received. They are closer in age to the children of the brothers’ kids. From gossip columns I have seen, the 2nd tranch of children are not well-liked by their peers.

Outside of the very restricted enrollment requirements of a handful of top-tier schools for the real elite, there’s not much difference. In any event, for the young, the culture rules.
Culture wins, every time. But both culture and the *wins* are ephemeral. If they were not, there would be no cultural shifts and we would not today see the old hippies agitating for WWIII.
The kid could rebel without the legal identity change. Just adopt a name/appearance/identity as so many others do. I do suspect some sort of outside political influence designed to humiliate/hurt Elon.
Kids do things to be noticed or be a part of a group or clique. The trans thing is just that - a clique.
