Well I always had to pre-soak colors of the same and it help it before washing.

I wasn’t aware of the vinegar solution to stop it.

No help,but that's all I know about dyes that some clothes have ruined over the years!

When vinegar isn’t available, use salt, about a handful for a tub load. I’ve had good results with either vinegar or salt.
