Our little town has the Garrison Forest Veteran's cemetery nearby, where 37,000 veterans are buried. There are 1,300 new burials every year. On Memorial Day, they will host a lovely ceremony to honor the families visiting. The VFW and American Legion sponsor it every year, including the singing of the National Anthem, participation by high school ROTC groups, a live musical selection, and several speakers. Every grave has a flag posted on it, and community members are invited to put them up and take them down after Memorial Day. It makes me proud and grateful that in these wicked times, so many people still turn out for the occasion. Looking forward to it on Monday.

I was thinking about how they feed

My son and DIL live in the midst of a large urban sprawl. The developer put about 50 or so widely separated houses in the middle of a large wooded area surrounded by the city and about a half mile from an interstate and a mega mall and other retail establishments. I think access is via a transmission line that crosses one edge of the area.

A red fox vixen decided that underneath their yard barn was a fantastic place for her den. The storage shed was about 50 or so feet from the house and backs up to the woods. She raised two kits there. They were noticed when the kits crept out into the yard for sun and to play.

Well then my DIL, also a mother, decided that red fox kits so near her son’s sand box was a threat. So, she located the den entrance and blocked it. the vixen removed the stuff used to block her den.

This went on and until my DIL shoveled the entrance with a wheel barrow of dirt. Finally it was over.

Until next year........ then it began all over

I rooted for Sadie, my name for the fox. I thought it was something of an honor to have an urbanized fox choose the location in my son’s yard

I have wrens in my wren house again this year, yay! And today I am working on vegetable gardening tasks including setting up a hydroponics system indoors—because to plant a garden is to believe in a future.
