There are some people on FR who seem to enjoy scaring themselves like kids telling ghost stories around a campfire. There are many others who gravitate to conspiracy theories because it makes them feel safer — after all, *someone* is in control, even if those someones are evil. It’s more comfortable for them than living in a chaotic world where random things just happen and no humans are in control of it and it doesn’t make sense — that’s a really scary world!

I think this is a naturally occurring virus that got loose in a particularly active and promiscuous segment of the “gay community” and was able to spread like wildfire in those *sexual networks”. We may well see cases outside that group who happened to touch an object that came into contact with an oozing monkeypox sore, etc. But it’s not going to be a pandemic like the Spanish Flu or Covid.

Thousands of people rode on planes with identified symptomatic monkeypox cases (and are being monitored). These men have shopped at stores, stayed in hotels, sat around in airports, eaten at restaurants, etc. Yet we aren’t seeing the hundreds of cases one would expect if the virus had been altered to spread more easily through the air. If someone did mess with it and try to use it as a bioweapon, they created a dud.

It’s possible some bad actors might have managed to synthesize smallpox and aerosolize it. They might release it in a busy international airport tomorrow or next week or next year. That’s scary. If such a terrible thing does happen, many, many of us will die — and for those who survive, life as we know it will be very, very over for a number of years.
