My understanding is that AIDS was originally isolated to the 'gay' community such that it was termed 'GRIDS', or Gay-Related Immune Deficiency Syndrome. I believe it had even been traced to a source spreader which happened to be a male flight attendant. But once it jumped into the blood supply and drug-user community, it became termed AIDS.
There have been arguments that AIDS wasn't a naturally occurring infection either.
