No, they are not. They’re special and seasonal for a reason. And they are SO good! :)
The closest you’ll get to growing a Vidalia-type of onion in a Northern garden is a Walla-Walla.
We used this company to order onion plants for Jung’s back in the day. Always great quality!

Of course, you’ve missed the May 15th shipping date. Not sure if they ship again for fall planting; we only offered onions in the spring.
My faves through the years have been Copra, Ailsa Craig, Walla-Walla and for a red onion I like Redwing. Up here, you want what’s called a ‘long day’ onion, which is suited to our northern growing zones. (It has something to do with the amount of daylight various onions need.)
If you ever happen across a variety called ‘Candy’ or ‘Red Candy,’ buy them! They are amazing; so sweet! You can grow them in the north, no problem.
Very smart about the red-painted rocks!
Wonder if it works for Chipmunks? They LOVE to take ONE BITE out of a berry and then leave it. Jerks!
Luckily, I’m not fussy about pre-bitten food, LOL!
I’d think that would fool a whole host of critters!
