People always rally behind a "wartime President". It's a well-known and well-attested phenomenon. That the Democrats use it so blatantly demonstrates their cynicism about the American public.
Democrats always try to get us into a war that has no bearing on American national interests. Then when Republicans are willing to fight to defend actual American national interests, the Democrats are the first in line to criticize, condemn, and complain.
