Way too many people are fixated on personalities. Its an easy way to get worked up about current events, but it is extremely misleading. Big things have big causes. A truly exceptional man, a “great man” can bend the stream of history, somewhat, but there are very few great men.
History rarely turns on a single person, other than incidentally, as a random factor on a single point. Leaders matter mainly as an expression of broader forces. They are created by circumstances, they are moved, not movers.
In this case the Ukrainian resistance is clearly a matter of the Ukrainian popular will, not the creation of Zelensky. He is yet another man created by circumstances, carried along by a popular tide. All this focus on Zelensky is beyond silly. Anyone objecting to Ukrainian policy should be complaining about the actual Ukrainians, those collective millions.
Putin is, or has been, btw, a genuine “great man”. Being “great” is not a moral judgment, nor has it anything to do with positive outcomes.
That is probably what the French monarchy were thinking when they got France involved in the American Revolutionary War. Then the French revolution happened, the elimination of the French aristocracy, the dictator Napoleon rose to power, and then a European-wide war.
